Predictions for the AFC West in 2013-2014

For many years in the west there would be different teams winning the division, they would be the chiefs, broncos and chargers. The chargers would win the division but would stall in the playoffs. The Broncos have Peyton Manning and they look to win the division title this year as well. Is this the year that the Oakland Raiders find a way to win the AFC West or will the chargers or Broncos win as the chiefs look to be in rebuilding mode.

Kansas City Chiefs (4-12): The Chiefs last season had the worst record in the NFL and own the number on pick in the draft, they are lead by quarterback Alex Smith. Smith just joined the Chiefs this off season and needs to make good throws and give these receivers a chance to make plays. Their running back is Jamal Charles that has the potential to be a top 5 running back in the league, he has to find holes and help Smith out. Their receiving core to me is their weakest point on the team, although they have Dwayne Bowe who is a great receiver but he needs help. They also have Jon Baldwin, Donnie Avery, Devon Wylie and Tony Moeaki which have to make it easy on Smith and catch the ball and make plays happen. Their offensive line lost some pieces this off season but if they draft Luke Joeckel and sign Albert they will be in good shape and will have to make holes for Charles and protect the backfield. Their front seven is young and are lead by LB Tamba Hali who has to be the leader of this defense and needs to make plays happen to get the offense back on the field. Their secondary is young but they have some major talent. Brandon Flowers, Eric Berry, and Dunta Robinson all have to cover well, get interceptions and make open field tackles. The chiefs in my opinion are so young and have many holes, so I do not see them having a successful season.

San Diego Chargers (8-8): The Chargers last season went 7-9 and did not make the playoffs, and are lead by quarterback Phillip Rivers. Rivers has the potential to be a great quarterback but he has to play consistent, not turn the ball over, and make the right decisions. The chargers running game consists of Danny Woodhead and Ryan Mathews, which ever one gets the start they have to run well, put the team on their backs and catch the ball out of the backfield to help Rivers. Their receiving core is excelling have a lot of experience. Vincent Brown, Malcolm Floyd, Robert Meachem, and Antionio Gates have to step up make catches, and and make big plays happen to put less pressure on their running game. Their offensive line does have talent but really need a left tackle but they will address that and will have to open holes for the backs. Their front 7 is their biggest problem in my opinion and are lead by Corey Liuget and Melvin Ingram that have to make sacks wrap uup ball carriers and cause turnovers. Their secondary has experience and are lead by Eric Weddle and Cornelius Brown that need to lead their squad to make interceptions and to make sure they make open field tackles. The Chargers lack star power in my opinion and will be a .500 team.

Oakland Raiders (6-10): The raiders had a tough season last year by going 4-12 and the offense was very inconsistent. They are lead by new addition Matt Flynn who does not have a lot of experience but he needs to step in make good throws and let these receivers make plays. Their running back Darren McFadden who was injured quite a bit last year has to come back and run for over 1,300 yards, not fumble and be the beast we all know he is. Their receivers are young but they have good speed and need to improve. Jacoby Ford, Denarius Moore and Rod Streater have to make plays and help Flynn out. This offensive line is very experienced and have to open holes for the backs and give Flynn a clean pocket. Their front 7 does have some talent and Pat Sims and Lamar Houston both have to be the leaders of this defense and make plays happen. Their secondary is the biggest issue, they do not have the talent they used to and Tracy Porter, Mike Jenkins, Tyvon Branch and Chimdi Chekwa have to prove they are good secondary players by tackling well, making interceptions and helping this front 7 out. The Raiders still have a lot of holes to take care of so that is why I see them only winning 6 games.

Denver Broncos (13-3): Last season the Denver Broncos won the AFC West and went to the AFC championship games which they lost to the Ravens. The broncos are lead by veteran quarterback Peyton Manning that needs to have another great year and take good care of the football. Their running game is lead by Willis McGahee that has to prove he should be the starter by having a lot of yards and extending plays. Their receiving core is so talented lead by Wes Welker, Eric Decker, Demaryius Thomas, Jacob Tamme, Joel Dressen, and Trindon Holiday who need to make sure they make life easy on Manning. They have a great offensive line that needs to have another good year and be good in pass and run blocking. Their front 7 is their biggest issue in my opinion. Von Miller, Robert Ayers, Derek Wolfe and Joe Mays all need to have great years by tackling well, forcing fumbles and getting to the quarterback. Their secondary has so much talent lead by Champ Bailey, Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, Rahim Moore and Chris Carter all have to cover well, make tackles, and make sure they confuse quarterbacks by different coverages. I see the broncos winning the division because they have so much talent and they will go far into the AFC Playoffs.
